New GRS200 with extended troubleshooting for the repair of electronic assemblies https://smttoday.com/2024/08/02/new-grs200-with-extended-troubleshooting-for-the-repair-of-electronic-assemblies/ Fri, 02 Aug 2024 14:04:23 +0000 https://smttoday.com/?p=16035 The post New GRS200 with extended troubleshooting for the repair of electronic assemblies appeared first on SMT Today.

]]>

The new GRS200 fault locator uses the proven passive analogue signature analysis and compares a faultless assembly with the board under test. This method detects typical faults in electronics production, service and repairs quickly and without extensive circuit knowledge.

‘By using the GRS200, missing or reversed components, incorrect component values or component types, counterfeit components as well as short circuits or opens can be recognized very easily,’ says Hermann Reischer, Managing Director of Polar Instruments GmbH. The system consists of analogue signature hardware and powerful software with LIVE signature analysis, program mode and CAD data display. In addition, circuit diagrams, assembly photos, repair reports and an optional digital multimeter may be integrated. For detailed analysis, the system imports more than 20 different formats CAD data, including GenCAD, Hyperlynx, IPC-2581 and ODB++.  Furthermore, circuit networks can be graphically highlighted and the associated components displayed.

The nodal impedance test is performed on the unpowered module, whereby a current-limited AC voltage signal generates an impedance signature by measuring voltage and current. The GRS200 system compares the signatures of the defective module with a stored good sample and indicates any noticeable deviations above a defined limit value. As an alternative to the nodal impedance test, an external multimeter can also be integrated into the test process. This allows, for example, voltage and resistance values, frequencies and temperatures to be assigned to defined test points in the CAD layout. It is also possible to locate short circuits on power supply rails and bus lines. An integrated short-circuit locator, in conjunction with the external multimeter, tracks the networks based on the CAD data using a highly sensitive four-wire resistance measurement and tone control. This makes it possible to narrow down the physical position of a short circuit to just a few millimeters.

Within the test program, test points are assigned to circuit networks in the CAD file and their analogue signatures are saved for later comparison. If no CAD data is available, test programs can also be created manually by defining the IC package style and the number of pins.

All test results are documented for traceability. Results for each assembly are recorded in a repair report, providing valuable repair history information. Using an optional USB camera, it is possible to take pictures of an assembly and save them as photo documentation in the test program.

ACM Research Enters Fan-out Panel Level Packaging Market with Introduction of Ultra C vac-p Flux Cleaning Tool for Chiplets https://smttoday.com/2024/07/29/acm-research-enters-fan-out-panel-level-packaging-market-with-introduction-of-ultra-c-vac-p-flux-cleaning-tool-for-chiplets/ Mon, 29 Jul 2024 21:19:48 +0000 https://smttoday.com/?p=15973 The post ACM Research Enters Fan-out Panel Level Packaging Market with Introduction of Ultra C vac-p Flux Cleaning Tool for Chiplets appeared first on SMT Today.

]]>

ACM Research, Inc. (ACM) (NASDAQ: ACMR), a leading supplier of wafer processing solutions for semiconductor and advanced wafer-level packaging applications, today announced the Ultra C vac-p flux cleaning tool for fan-out panel-level packaging (FOPLP). Utilizing vacuum technology, the new tool efficiently removes flux residues from chiplet structures. ACM also announced today it received a purchase order from a major China semiconductor manufacturer which has been shipped to the customer’s facility in July.

“The demand for greater computing power, lower latency and higher bandwidth driven by AI, data centers and autonomous vehicles makes FOPLP an increasingly essential technology,” said Dr. David Wang, ACM’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “FOPLP integrates multiple chips, passive components and interconnections within a single panel-packaged unit, enhancing flexibility, scalability and cost-efficiency. ACM’s Ultra C vac-p represents a major advancement in addressing the cleaning challenges associated with next-generation advanced packaging technologies. This launch not only underscores ACM’s ongoing innovation in semiconductor manufacturing, but also our commitment to address the evolving needs of the industry.”

According to Yole Group[1], FOPLP adoption will grow faster than the overall fan-out market, and its market share will move from 2% in 2022 to 8% in 2028. The growth of FOPLP is primarily driven by its potential cost savings. For instance, panels typically utilize more than 95% of the material due to their rectangular or square shape, whereas traditional silicon wafers use less than 85% of the material due to their circular shape. The effective area of a 600x600mm panel is also 5.7 times larger than that of a traditional 300mm silicon wafer, enabling overall cost reductions of approximately 66%. This enhanced area utilization leads to higher throughput, greater AI chip design flexibility, and significant cost savings.

The Ultra C vac-p tool addresses critical steps in the advanced packaging process, particularly the removal of flux residue before underfilling, which is essential for eliminating voids. Traditional cleaning methods often fail with small bump pitches (less than 40 microns) and large chip sizes due to surface tension and limited liquid penetration. The vacuum technology in ACM’s new tool ensures the cleaning liquid thoroughly reaches all gaps, even in large panel substrates where traditional methods fall short. Combined with ACM’s proprietary IPA drying technology, this comprehensive cleaning process prevents residues that could impair device performance.

About the Ultra C vac-p Cleaning Tool

The Ultra C vac-p Cleaning tool is designed for panel substrates and accommodates both organic and glass materials. It is capable of handling panels sized 510 mm x 515 mm and 600 mm x 600 mm, while effectively managing cover warpages up to 7mm.

Revolution in THT inspection: fast and precise 3D measurement for solder joints and components https://smttoday.com/2024/07/19/revolution-in-tht-inspection-fast-and-precise-3d-measurement-for-solder-joints-and-components/ Fri, 19 Jul 2024 16:40:23 +0000 https://smttoday.com/?p=15879 The post Revolution in THT inspection: fast and precise 3D measurement for solder joints and components appeared first on SMT Today.

]]>

The German company GÖPEL electronic is the specialist for flexible and innovative THT inspection systems. With the THT Line · 3D system, it is taking the inspection of THT assemblies to a new level. The latest innovation, a state-of-the-art 3D camera module, revolutionises failure detection and at the same time significantly reduces the false call rate when measuring critical THT solder joints. The test time is also considerably reduced. GÖPEL electronic is thus setting new standards in the double-sided, parallel inspection of THT assemblies.

One part of this new development is the camera-lens combination, which is characterised by high-resolution image acquisition, a larger field of view (FOV) and an increased image capturing speed. In addition to the 3D measurement of THT pins and its solder joints, this higher resolution makes it possible to inspect SMD components up to the package size 0201. Especially for selective soldering, this allows the inspection of SMD components which are close to the THT solder joints.

This camera module is also characterised by a telecentric lens with a measuring range of up to 35 mm, which is advantageous when using different carriers in the production process. As the PCB-A level can vary by several millimetres in relation to the transport level in such applications, this new camera module has no longer any limits for both 3D measurements and 2D inspections.

Another groundbreaking innovation of this camera module is the integration of a reflection reducer, which significantly increases data quality in critical layout situations during 3D measurements on the solder side of the assembly. Especially steep, very shiny and closely spaced solder joints can lead to reflections, which causes incorrect height information during 3D measurements. This effect is physically based and all 3D AOI systems are faced with this issue. Although the data can be corrected using various interpolation methods, it does not necessarily correspond to reality. To avoid this, GÖPEL electronic has integrated a “Reflex Reducer” into the 3D camera module, which eliminates this disturbing effect and increases the reliability of the 3D measurement.

The THT Line · 3D enables the inspection of THT components, THT solder joints and SMD components in one system. Assemblies can be fed automatically or manually with or without carriers. The PILOT AOI system software offers the user a high level of operating convenience and maximum failure detection thanks to different inspection methods. The proven MagicClick tool generates a production-ready inspection program including the component library in just a few minutes.

]]>

In production, it is essential to continuously optimize processes in order to ensure efficiency and ultimately competitiveness. Process analysis plays a central role in this and enables companies to understand, evaluate and improve their processes. iTAC offers comprehensive real-time and historical analysis at machine, line and factory level with its “Manufacturing Analytics Control” product family. The associated Asset Analyzer analyzes the performance of the entire manufacturing environment. The solution ensures that machine and process data can be obtained quickly and easily from any machine in production.

The ‘Manufacturing Analytics Control’ product family from iTAC aims to analyze and optimize manufacturing performance and make predictions about future process quality. It can be used in addition to the iTAC.MOM.Suite manufacturing operations management system, which is designed to plan, control and monitor production processes in real time, but is also offered as a stand-alone solution.

The Asset Analyzer, a tool from the “Manufacturing Analytics Control” product family, helps companies to identify quality problems in production and increase overall efficiency. The solution can be used across all industries, for example in the automotive, electronics and medical sectors, but also in areas such as injection molding, metal processing and battery production.

Everything in sight – automatic error detection through AI

The Asset Analyzer is a tool or dashboard that enables performance analysis of the entire production environment. “This gives companies a clear insight into current and past performance, which is particularly beneficial for critical machines and processes. Operators can react quickly and efficiently to deviations and gain a comprehensive understanding thanks to the holistic view. It is no longer necessary to call up several systems, as the information can be found centrally in a dashboard. This saves time when searching for deviations and increases transparency at the same time”, says Martin Strempel, Business Development Manager Data Analytics at iTAC Software AG.

One particular advantage is the proactive solution to quality problems. Quality parameters can be managed in real time and an AI engine automatically detects errors, for example in electrocoating. Real-time notifications via MS Teams provide information in the case of alarms, events and abnormal behavior, resulting in fewer errors in the production process.

The solution supports the intuitive retrieval of machine or process data in the dashboard. Access to your own data is made considerably easier, as information from various machines and process steps in the production environment can be retrieved quickly and easily.

Applicable without technical knowledge

A key advantage of the Asset Analyzer is its user-friendliness. It is designed for process operators, engineers and management – not just IT or AI specialists. No special skills or knowledge are required to perform in-depth analysis. Dashboards can be configured within minutes. The solution is globally scalable.

“Many other tools are complicated to use, require special expertise and are often not designed to analyze the entire production environment. In addition, they often have manufacturer or hardware dependencies. Our aim is to provide tools that are not only powerful, but also quick to implement and, above all, easy to use. With the Asset Analyzer, we are paving the way for a comprehensive understanding of performance and thus for higher productivity and quality,” says Martin Strempel.
